The “Thunderbirds”, the world renowned Air Demonstration Unit of the United States Air Force, are pleased to announce they will be coming to Ireland this summer. The “Thunderbirds” will be here at the invitation of the Salthill Airshow for a performance on June 24. Begun in 1953, the Thunderbirds have become synonymous with the cutting edge in aviation and flight techniques.

The Thunderbirds will be performing about 30 maneuvers, both in group formation and solo demonstrations. The 2007 team of pilots includes the Air Force’s first female jet demonstration pilot, Major Nicole Malachowski. Major Malachowski is Thunderbird No. 3, right wing, and is in her second year with the unit. This year the Thunderbirds will also be featuring their first female solo pilot, Major Samantha Weeks, Thunderbird No. 6.

During the demonstration there will be a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The four-aircraft diamond formation demonstrates the training and precision of the Air Force pilots, while the solo aircraft highlight the maximum capabilities of the F-16 aircraft.

Including the appearance at Salthill, the Thunderbirds are scheduled to perform in at least 68 shows in 21 U.S. states and 9 European countries during 2007.
