Colourful Dutch make inaugural appearance at Salthill Air Show

By Julie Tierney

ONE OF the star attractions at this year's Salthill Airshow on July 6 will be a solo appearance by the Dutch Air Force, taking part in the show for the first time.

The Royal Netherlands Air Force solo display PC-7 aircraft is painted in the standard Dutch elementary training aircraft high-visibility colour scheme of yellow, red, and white but during airshows is equipped with two smoke generators to accentuate the display routine, making the show visually more attractive.

The Dutch display is just part of an exciting programme set to thrill the huge crowds expected at Salthill in what is the eleventh running of the popular air show, one of Europe's only free airshows.

Making a welcome return to the Promenade and still heading the line up is the world famous Royal Air Force aerobatic display team The Red Arrows.

Their thrilling display will be approximately 25 minutes long with multi-coloured smoke as it performs various aerobatics and wonderful shapes in the sky.

Also appearing is the German Air Force with a display called Tornado, the Royal Air Force, the Irish Air Corps, the Irish Army Parachute display team, the Irish Navy, Yak 52 display aircraft, Irish Army Static Display of equipment and the Civil Defence.

More unusual aircraft such as a Garda Air Support Unit Eurocopter EC135 and an Irish Coast Guard Sikorsky S61N Sea King will be on display, plus Aer Arann Express has confirmed the attendance of one of its aircraft - possibly one of its new ATR72 66-seater commuter aircraft. The ATR72 is a stretched version of the 50-seater ATR42-300, four of which are operated by Aer Arann Express.
