| Europe’s only professional wing
walking team, the Utterly Butterly Barnstomers are guaranteed to spread
a little happiness at the Salthill Airshow on Sunday 4th of July.
Combining the latest safety technology with the courage and daring of early
20’s aviators, they will be entertaining the crowds with a taste of their
barnstorming magic.
The Team’s barnstorming antics date from the roaring 20’s when heroic pilots came home from the War with a passion for flying. Sleeping in barns, these glamorous dare devils performed public displays around the country, raising a storm where ever they went. To attract larger crowds, these cheeky you aviators persuaded girlfriends and engineers to walk the wings during flight. With no safety equipment such feats often led to tragedy and so sadly in 1933 wing walking was banned. This year Utterly Butterly delicious Aerobabes will again be walking the linen wings of their 1940s vintage Boeing Stearman biplanes. These awesome machines are fitted with massive 450hp radial engines and 9-foot propellers whose tips reach supersonic speed as they bite into the air. Weather conditions permitting, for the first year since 1933 the fearless wing walkers will carefully step over the side of the cockpit to take a walk on the wild along the lower wing. Battling against winds of over 100mph, they will edge their way along the wings, being careful to step only on wooden struts. Strength and nerves of steel will be vital, as accidentally stepping off the struts onto the paper-thin fabric would seriously damage the aircraft. These darlings of the skies also climb up from the cockpit to ride the top wing as their daring pilots take the aircraft through a breathtaking sequence of deliciously entertaining aerobatics. Travelling at speeds of up to 150mph, and pulling 4G they perform adrenaline pumping loops, rolls, stall turns. An extreme manoeuvre is the ‘Mirror’ formation, where one aircraft hangs inverted whilst the second moves in closely beneath, and the girls try to touch hands. During low level barnstorming flypasts, the girls get an unusual view of their audience as they perform handstands using the unique swiveling rig! The Wingwalkers will be finishing their existing display by undoing their harness and climbing from the top wing down to the safety of the cockpit below. Utterly amazing! It’s the taste that drives them Utterly Butterly. |
