Aer Arann

Aer Arann, which has been flying sucessfully to the Aran Islands for 28 years, is now a Dublin based airline, with ambitions to expand as Ireland’s Regional Airline.

The airline stepped in to serve this route at short notice in March 1998.  Following a competitive tendering process.  Aer Arann was recently confirmed by the Dept. of Public Enterprise as the airline to operate this routine until 2001.  The aircraft used is a 36-seat Shorts 360, built in Belfast in 1987.

Traffic on the route has increased by 25% since Aer Arann commenced.  The airline recently carried its 10,000th passenger between Dublin and Donegal.

The Irish Aviation Authority has approved Aer Arann to the latest European standards, called JAR (Joint Airworthiness Requirement), for both aircraft operation and aircraft maintenance.

In addition to the Donegal route, Aer Arann operats Dublin to Isle of Man twice a day for Manx Airlines, and will operate a weekly Galway - Jersey charter for Delta Travel in the summer.  Sightseeing flights in the Dublin area on behalf of the First Flight Aviation are planned.  The airline is currently seeking a second aircraft, with a vew to opening new routes within the next few months.

Aer Arann has decided to name its Dublin based aircraft after legendary Irish women.  The first is called Eimear.  Eimear was the beloved of Cu Chulainn, chosen because she had the six gifts of beauty, voice, sweet speech, needlework, wisdom and chastity.

In the meantime, the traditional Aer Arann service to the Aran Islands continues successfully.  It is a vital link for both islanders and tourists, and is attracting more and more business every year.
